As drone pilot Travis Ray Sanders flew over the lake of lava at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to get a bird’s eye view of the event, he was struck down by a park ranger.
The disgruntled ranger apparently yelled at Sanders three times to stop flying his drone over the property because the act of flying an unmanned aircraft is illegal in all national parks across the U.S. — a fact Sanders claimed to be unaware of.
Several hundred bystanders watched as Sanders was brought down with the park ranger’s Taser. Sanders’ young child screamed out in horror trying to defend her father. Sanders’ wife also witnessed the event.
Many of the bystanders thought the park ranger’s behavior was unsolicited and excessive. Bystanders also said the ranger confronted Sanders as if he was ready to fight.
